Last month I had the tremendous opportunity to meet voters and interact with students and children from across the District at the 7th Annual 17th Street Festival! Ward 2 Councilmember Jack Evans and I shared a booth at the community street festival I cofounded in 2010 as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner.
The Festival was founded in 2010 to celebrate the renovation of 17th Street, a necessary neighborhood improvement long-desired by residents and business owners alike. At the time of the street renovation, I represented the northern business portion of 17th Street and was the Dupont Circle ANC’s point person with the District Department of Transportation coordinating construction activity.
Today I filed the requisite paperwork to challenge my opponent’s petitions. While it was clear that her team made a concerted effort to collect the 200 valid and verified signatures necessary to appear on the November 8 ballot for Ward 2 State Board of Education Representative, a thorough review of the signatures she submitted revealed that she fell far short of the signatures required.Read more

Over the past 30 hours, I’ve struggled greatly with processing the country’s worst domestic terror attack since September 11, 2001. I’m filled with confusion, sorrow, and anger at the sheer magnitude of the atrocity. I’m also filled with love for my brothers and sisters who died and for the other victims whose harrowing acts of bravery we will come to know in the coming days. I have enormous hope for what comes next.

Long-term investment in our educational programs is critical to their ongoing success. In DC, we have an opportunity to continue our investment in an successful arts and music program at Fillmore Arts Center that has long filled the lack of exposure of there arts at various schools in the system. Chancellor Henderson’s budget for the 2016-17 school year eliminates vital funding for this resource school that serves 1,700 students at five elementary schools, two located in Ward 2: Ross Elementary School and Hyde-Addison Elementary School. Fillmore also serves Marie Reed in Ward 1 and Stoddert and Key in Ward 3.Read more
