I hope you will join me Thursday evening for a reception launching my reelection to the State Board of Education. With your support, I look forward to continuing to work every day toward making Ward 2 and the entire District a better place for student to learn, teachers to teach, and families to grow.
The past three years have been a time of great accomplishment for the Board of Education. We eliminated barriers to obtaining a diploma by creating a State Diploma for non-traditional students who earn a GED. We approved the Next Generation Science Standards to ensure that students in all grades receive rigorous, engaging science instruction. And we broke the shackles of No Child Left Behind through waivers that represent the District’s high standards and our commitment to addressing the unique needs of DC's students and schools.
But there is more to do.
The District’s health education standards need to be improved to focus on the skills students need to make informed, healthy decisions. And we must finalize our credit flexibility initiative that will provide high schoolers new pathways to graduation if they meet our rigorous standards. As we address these and other pressing issues, the Board of Education will remain focused at all times on improving students’ experiences, not just their test scores, and supporting our teachers and school staff who give their all every day on behalf of the District’s children.
To accomplish all of this, I need your help. I won’t mince words. This election is going to be expensive, and I intend to win it. If you support my reelection, know that I will continue to work for you every single day that I have the privilege of representing you and others across the District.
Thank you for your continued support, encouragement, and friendship.
